Enable with

gsettings set  org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.trackball middle-click-emulation  true

then set button

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.trackball scroll-wheel-emulation-button 8

mit: 8=klein links f. Rechtshaender, 9 Kl. re Linkshaender

Check results:

gsettings list-recursively | grep trackball
